The Center for Language Technology (CeLT) is requesting lesson proposals for the IU World Language Festival Virtual Academy. While we still plan to host the WLF on the Bloomington campus when possible, we hope the perpetual Canvas site can act as an extension of the one-day event, allowing us to celebrate world languages at IU all year long. This also gives us the opportunity to reach additional learners who would otherwise be unable to participate in an on-campus event.
Theme
With a persistent theme of “Widen Your World: Learn a New Language,” the WLF aims to celebrate the diverse cultures and languages of our world.
Eligibility
- All IU faculty, AIs, and FLTAs who teach a foreign/second language or culture course are eligible to submit a proposal
- Graduate students who are currently conducting research on area studies using world languages are also encouraged to submit a proposal.
- Faculty and graduate students studying linguistics or literature in a world language are also encouraged to submit a proposal.
Lesson Content and Formats
All sessions should be presented with the purpose of motivating participants to further explore world languages and cultures. To this end, they should focus on initialexposure to the language and/or culture. Instructors should not assume any prior knowledge of the language.
While the main target audience for WLF is high school students, we welcome content targeted to other age groups as well, including middle school students and college students. However, presentations and lessons should focus on education, not on academic discussion. The following is a list of desired lesson categories and formats. Each lesson will be presented in the course as one module containing the lesson content and accompanying activities. We will assign one digital badge for each module completed.
Presentations
Lesson Format | Learner Participation and Assessment |
Short Video: or Microsoft PowerPoint presentation **Both formats require a separate Word document with the transcript of the audio. ** | Canvas quiz with 2-5 questions that allows learners to indicate mastery of the content. Quiz questions need to have correct answers and be able to be automatically graded (e.g., multiple choice, T/F, etc.). Learners should have unlimited opportunities to take each quiz. Correct answers should be shown after each attempt. |
- All materials shared should be clear of copyright issues. Here is some information regarding the Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Online Video.
- You can find some 3D cultural objects at https://sketchfab.com/IU3D/collections, and 360° videos at https://www.360cities.net/
Selection Criteria
- The proposed lesson is relevant to the Festival theme
- The lesson has a clearly defined focus
- The length of the lesson is appropriate for the lesson content
- The lesson has the potential to engage participants
- The proposed content/length suits the proposed age group(s)
